#481: Nehemiah 1-3

Another minor prophet, Nehemiah, took on the job of repairing the wall around Jerusalem, much in the same way Ezra rebuilt the temple. And in the first three chapters, scripture goes into great detail about how the rebuilding process was done, where, and by whom.

I’ve said this before, scripture went into great minute detail about the building of the portable tabernacle, and while I cannot figure out why such detail needed to be recorded, I have faith in God that such detail was important. And I am sure that such detail in the Book of Nehemiah is warranted as well.

And while I’m not trying to give a spoiler alert, we shall see in the New Testament about a wall that God will build around the New Jerusalem, and the fine detail in it. Again, something that is important to God.

Maybe it’s because God is a detail oriented being. Perhaps He lays it out in such precise manner as to show His concern with minor things; things that we brush off as minor.

For example the Fourth Commandment; “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy”, the only commandment that starts off with “remember”. I’ve heard every excuse; “How do we know which day is the seventh day”, “what does it matter which day we rest on, as long as we pick a day”, “Jesus fulfilled the Ten Commandments by dying on the cross, so we no longer have to celebrate the Sabbath, instead, we celebrate the Lord’s Day”.

Just yesterday, I was shopping for metal signs listing the Ten Commandments. There is scripture where God tol the Hebrews to write the commandments on their gates and above their doors, and it is something I’ve always wanted to do, even if it is a visual reminder for myself. So, I decided to finally do it.

I had to check each sign to make sure it was accurate before I bought it, because man has changed the Ten Commandments to his liking. One had even corrupted the commandments so much, that the Fourth Command had been moved the third, and instead of saying “Remember the Sabbath Day”, it had been changed to “Rest on the Lord’s Day”.

As I try to keep the Sabbath (I fail a lot), it was extremely refreshing to me to see that Charlie Kirk had finally woken up and realized what the Sabbath Day actually was and how it had benefited him.

Now I’m not suggesting everyone stop going to church on Sunday and start going on Saturday. I believe you can go to church as much as you feel the need, regardless of what day the calendar says. But like Charlie, who worshiped on Sunday but still observed the Sabbath on Saturday, had the right idea in mind.

In fact, if we want to get technical, or detailed as God did, God ordered the Hebrews to not even come out of their house on the Sabbath Day, and if that is the case, how could they worship on Saturday?

Sorry, just some random thoughts popping into my head as I type. But to blatantly change the commandments to fit the desire of man is out of line.

Besides, if Jesus did nail the commandments to the cross (which I don’t believe He did), why all the fuss about changing them?
