Moses wrote a psalm.
David wrote many.
For some, the author is unknown.
These next few psalms were written by the “sons of Korah”. Korah was one of the rebels who turned against Moses and was swallowed up by the ground. But his sons were different than him, and as Levites, they ended up being gate keepers and singers in the temple, according to theology.
Now, allow me to say this again. I’m not an intelligent man. I’ve never been a reader…it has to be something really informative to hold my attention, and I’m one of those who will “wait ’till the movie comes out” kind of guys. That said, many of these psalms are perfect literature, and while I understand the written words, I may not comprehend the meaning behind them. And with these psalms written by the “sons of Korah”, most are above my head. Hemingway would have loved them, so would Shakespear. Probably my English teachers that I paid little attention to. But me…they’re very poetic, but I would rather they be made into a movie.
I won’t begin to try to decipher their meaning, so I read what I can, and if something is plainly in front of my nose, then I try to take it to heart. For example, in psalm 42, Verse 10, scripture says, “As with a [h]breaking of my bones, My enemies [i]reproach me, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” I have no idea as to whether the author is talking about a battle enemy, or just someone in their town they disagree with. Some psalms, like the psalms of David were written after various events in his life, but with the sons of Korah, the Bible doesn’t point to a particular event.
What I do take from Verse 10 however, really applies today. With the advent of social media, non-believers have made themselves known. At every turn, they challenge Christians, especially during times of disaster, calling out “Where is your God?”, as if God stops all of the bad that Satan causes. I say again, we are in a daily battle between God and Satan, and we are the pawns. If we are Godly people, if we have a relationship with God, if we are truly faithful to Him, our chances of having something bad happen are greatly reduced; not eliminated, but reduced. Remember, even Job was a righteous man, but he was still tempted by Satan, a test of his faith and trust in God. So yes, even back in those days, non-believers or those who worshiped Baal or Molech, did not believe in the God of Abraham and would taunt others. Even Goliath taunted Saul’s army with that “where is your God?” line, and unfortunately for him, the boy David showed Goliath where God was!
Now Psalm 43 hits us right out of the gate. Verse 1, “Vindicate me, O God, And plead my cause against an ungodly nation “ Do you know how many times my friends and I have talked about how unGodly our country and our world has become? Women aborting babies, gay pride marches and rallies, murders, rape, deceit, hatred, Facebook keyboard warriors, a nation polarized by politics with neither side event wanting to come to neutral ground. And it has been going on for centuries now. Read about the “Dark Ages”. Read about the protesters who fought against the Roman Catholics and were killed for it. Christians are being persecuted in country after country. Socialist countries are oppressing their people, and you can be killed for even speaking against their dictator. Yes, we are living in some sad times, and many are praying for the quick coming of Jesus Christ to relieve us of the world we have to ensure.
That said, many of the psalms are still applicable today, and while most are way above my head, I can still pick out bits and pieces that hit home, and so can you.
Let’s agree to pray for each other, so we can learn to understand the meaning of these psalms. I would love to understand them, to have the Holy Spirit show me the truth. Shall we pray for each other, for comprehension and understanding?
