I warned you that Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab, was wicked, and she has set out to kill all of God’s prophets. And Obadiah, and Edomite who had converted to Judaism, was hiding prophets from her.
Remember in the Book of Judges when Gideon cut down the statue of Baal, and the people set out to kill him. His father interceded, telling them that if Baal was so great, he could right the statue himself. Obviously Baal, a false god, could not do it, showing the people that Baal was absolutely nothing.
Then when the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant, they parked it next to the statue of their idol, and every morning the idol had fallen. They would set it back up and the next morning it would be down again, pieces even broken. No matter how they tried, their false god was no match for our God.
Will they ever learn?
So now Elijah the prophet has challenged King Ahab. He has asked to meet 100 prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel to see whose God is true. Well, you can read the rest, obviously our God of Abraham wins. Miracle after miracle, God has proven Himself to be the only One and true God, yet the people just won’t stop worshiping idols.
I remember reading once, “God answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is ‘no’”. What is it that possesses these people. Do they pray to God and not get the answer they want, so they choose to bow down to other idols?
And it is no different today. Deep in our hearts, we all know our God is the Only God, yet when He doesn’t answer our prayers the way we want, our belief and our faith wains. But that is no different than the serpent who deceived Eve…it is just Satan planting the idea in our head that God does not love us, or worse, that God doesn’t exist. And even though we see miracle after miracle, we still doubt the existence of God.
Trust me, I’ve seen vehicle accidents that in all appearances, no one can survive, and they come out with just some scratches, miraculously come out I might add. There is no doubt in my mind that God exists.
Yet, even Elijah can lose faith. Jezebel sets out to kill him, and he escapes, but he begins to doubt God and His mission for Elijah. But what happens? God provides. Ravens bring him food to eat while he is hiding from Jezebel.
And now we come to Elisha (and it took me a while to keep Elijah and Elisha squared in my mind). God is picking a replacement for Elijah because prophet don’t live forever. And Elijah recruits Elisha to be his assistant, and Elisha does not hesitate. He immediately kills the oxen he is plowing with and offers a sacrifice to God, the follows Elijah.
Are you willing to drop everything and serve God? If you’re out mowing your yard this week and a prophet comes by, telling you that you are going to be a servant of God, would you be willing to do that? It would take a lot of faith, especially today when Satan is so busy misleading people.
So many lessons to learn. So much to contemplate. All the more reason to stay as close to God as possible to let Him lead your life. Be consistent in prayer, pray often throughout the day. Think of God often so He is always in your mind. Keep your nose in the Bible, reading Gods word, and always pray for understanding.
God loves you, and wants only what is best for you. But remember, His Will will be done!
