Azariah becomes King of Judah, and he reigned 52 years! That’s more than the 40 years that each Saul, David, and Solomon reigned!
The other kings of Judah and Israel, didn’t last as long, one of them only sitting on the throne for one month before being assassinated. Wonder why?
Scripture says Azariah did good in the sight of the Lord; the others, not so much. Do you think the Lord overthrew their kingdom because they were bad? No. Do you think their reign was short because they had separated themselves from the Lord, which by nature, caused bad things to happen to them? Yes.
Again, I equate being close to God the same as a child playing in their fenced in front yard. When they stay close to home, when they stay in the yard, they naturally have the protection of mom and dad on their side. But if they open the gate, leave mom and dad and start walking down the street, they’re on their own. Mom and dad can’t protect them, and when we leave God’s side and go out on our own, doing the things we know we should be doing, we leave God’s protection behind and subject ourselves to the evil things in the world.
It’s all about God’s love. If we remain close to him through prayer, through Bible study, through a personal relationship, and obey Him out of love and not fear, God will protect us. But if we separate ourselves from Him and from His love, we lose that protection, not because He removed it, but because we distanced ourselves from it. It’s our own fault. No one can blame God for anything bad that happens, it’s all on us.
Does that mean if you’re a good Christian, bad things won’t happen to you? Certainly not. Good Christians pass. When God designed the world, He designed it so we would live forever, but what happened? We separated ourselves from Him, we allowed sin to creep into our lives. And because of that, no one lives forever, despite how good you are, or how bad you are. The reward though is in the end, when Jesus comes backs, and takes the good with Him to Heaven. So while our lives are short on this earth, our reward is everlasting life with Him.
But while we’re on this earth, we should remain close to Him and do what is right in His eyes, just like Ahaziah, and our lives will be blessed within His love. It is always there, it’s available to everyone, it’s free of charge, all we have to do is draw close to Him to experience it.
Just like the prodigal son, even though he chose to leave home, even though he strayed off the path of righteousness, his father never stopped loving him. His father’s love was still there, but he had chose to leave it. And when he returned home, his father accepted him back with open arms, blessed him with the love that had always been there, and threw a big feast for him. And it’s the same with God.
Whether or not you observe the Sabbath Day, I still wish everyone a Happy Sabbath and God’s Blessings.
