Verse 2: “The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.”
The more I’ve put great thought into the Glory of God, the same Glory that made Moses’ face shine, the more I keep seeing the word “light”. And in this verse, it talks about the people who had walked in darkness had now seen light, not just any light, but a “great light”. Obviously, that light is the Glory of God.
Now we have more prophesy in Verse 6. “For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Why are we prophesying about the birth of Jesus? Because God is promising to us that He will clarify the meaning of life. He knows His character has been misrepresented. He knows people have been taught to be afraid of Him. He knows that the people, and the authors of the Bible have misconceptions about Him, and He knows that He has to come to earth Himself and teach.
On that subject, when we read scripture like John 3:16, I tend to think of two different entities, God and Jesus, but we know they are one in the same. So it was actually God Himself that came to earth. That said, He personified Himself in the form of an Infant, so perhaps He was referring to “His Son” as the human flesh and blood form that He had taken and knew He had to give it up. The point is, it wasn’t just Jesus who came to earth, but God as well, and He had to do it to show us the true character of the Godhead, the Triune, the Creator.
And look at all the names given to this earthly flesh and blood. Wonderful. Counselor. Mighty God. Everlasting Father. Prince of Peace. Do those sound like bad characteristics to you? And knowing that Jesus is God, we know that God has the same character. And explain this, why would Jesus be called “Everlasting Father” is He were only the Son? That shows me right there that they are one in the same with the exact same character. God is not and angry, wrathful, tyrant. Stop believing that, and stop being afraid of Him!
I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that we take scripture way too seriously, not that it isn’t valid, but rather we tend to read too much into it. And it isn’t some type of code we have to crack, God isn’t going to give us the “meaning of life”, then make us decipher it. If we forget about our teachings, what has been engrained in our heads from childhood, and simply read scripture with common sense, the answers are as plain as the nose on our face.
God is good. Jesus is good. Jesus and God are one. The Holy Spirit is, forgive the thought, the step-child that doesn’t get equal credit. And I’ve never heard the voice of God nor have I heard the voice of Jesus. But I can attest that the Holy Spirit has done amazing things with me.
