It is no secret that Isaiah prophesies a lot about the coming of Jesus. And once again, I like the New King James Version of the Bible because it capitalizes Holy Names, so it helps me to determine which verbiage is coming from God or Jesus. As I was reading the other day, a question popped in my head. Exactly at what point did Jesus, the Son of Man, become Holy? What it at his conception and He was Holy in the womb, what it at His birth when He was born as a man, or was it at His baptism? Scripture talks about when He arose from the Jordan, the sky opened and God spoke.
I had this discussion with a friend and we decided it had to be at conception. If Jesus wasn’t Holy until His baptism, He would have surely sinned before that point, and we know Jesus was without sin; not so much as an immoral thought. And since the conception of Jesus was Immaculate, Mary being fertilized by God the Spirit, then the Fetus had to have been Holy from that point on.
And what we read today in Chapter 49, pretty much confirms that.
“The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me. 2He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me in the shadow of His hand. He made Me like a polished arrow; He hid Me in His quiver. 3He said to Me, “You are My Servant, Israel, in whom I will display My glory.”
As we can tell by the capitalized words, this passage is very likely God talking about His Son, Jesus. And if God called upon Him from the body of My (Jesus) mother, then Jesus had to be Holy in the womb, from the time of conception.
I know that unless you’ve read the Bible before, we haven’t gotten to the New Testament yet, but trust me, Jesus has been here the entire time. He was with God at the time of creation and has been ever since.
The title of this chapter is “The Servant and Light to the Gentiles”. Jesus was born into Jewish heritage. The Bible is clear on the genealogy of Jesus through both His mother Mary and His surrogate father, Joseph. Jesus was Jew who practiced Jewish customs, and there is no reason to believe anything changed from that. But Jesus is also the promise for the Gentiles as well.
You don’t have to be Jewish by heritage or religion to be saved, but you do have to follow and obey the laws of Jesus, which are the laws also of God. We often hear that the Old Testament is obsolete, that it was replaced by Jesus. How can that be when Jesus was with God at creation? He was with God when the Ten Commandments were given, both verbally and written on stone. And God is never changing, which means Jesus doesn’t change, which means the laws of the Old Testament are still valid. And these are the laws that Israel has been violating.
They have at the very least violated the First and Second Commandment as they have been molding and worshiping false gods and idols. They have committed adultery and murder. Judah had sex with his own daughter-in-law, his defense, he thought she was a prostitute. Sorry, but that’s funny.
David committed adultery and murder. Absalom dishonored his father by pursuing and trying to kill him. They have violated the Sabbath Day. They have committed acts of thievery and deceit. They have forgotten about the God that redeemed them from Israel, and by separating themselves from God and His design laws, are about to suffer the consequences, natural consequences of their actions.
That is what much of Isaiah is about; warning the children of Israel about the sins they’ve committed, warning them of the consequences of their sins, but at the same time reminding them of the promise of God, their Redeemer, whose Mercy shall endure forever.
And not much has changed in our world today. We are all sinners. We’ve forgotten and corrupted the Ten Commandments. And we are being informed that God is still there for us, Jew or Gentile, and that all we have to do is turn back to Him and He will welcome us back, with open and forgiving arms.
It’s not to late. Read God’s promises. Know that He is always there for you. And regardless of how bad you are, He will always welcome you back and forgive you of your sins.
I feel the time is near. Don’t wait. Develop a love affair with Jesus today!
