#406: Nahum

“Jesus is jealous, and the He avenges; Jesus avenges and is furious. The Jesus will take vengeance on His adversaries”

I agree with this! Remember when the Pharisees came up against Jesus and He became so angry He destroyed them? He rained fire down on Chiaphus and killed him on the spot! And when Peter drew his sword and cut the ear off of the Roman guard who had came to arrest Jesus, Jesus was shouting, “Cut off the other ear! Stab him! Kill him!”

I’m being sarcastic, of course; Jesus was the gentlest man to ever walk the face of the earth. In fact, the Pharisees tested Jesus to see if He truly was the Son of God, when they brought Him the prostitute and fully expected, if He was indeed the Son of God, to stone her to death. What did Jesus do? He forgave her.

And this is my go to and pretty much anything I read in the Old Testament; “If you’ve seen Me…you’ve seen the Father.” Broken record again, Jesus is God and God is Jesus, they are two thirds of the Holy Trinity, all having the same character.

Of course that actual text that Nahum starts out with is claiming that “God avenges, God is furious, God takes vengeance on His enemies.” And I’ll confess, to you and to God, when I read something like this, I don’t want to read the rest. And in this case, I’m not.

Yes, I’ve read Nahum before, five times before to be exact. But not this time. Not today Satan. Because if Nahum starts out talking about a furious and angry God, then he’s lost all credibility with me. My views on everything have changed, and if the character of God in the Old Testament doesn’t fit the same character of Jesus in the New Testament, I’m not wasting my time reading it.

Satan told the first “lie on earth” in the Garden when he tempted Eve, and he has lied all throughout history, and he still lies today. Satan wants to destroy the character of God, he wants God’s position, he started lying in Heaven when he convinced a third of the angels that God was an angry tyrant. And I would venture to guess, hearing sermons from pastors all over, he has lied to The Church, Inc. and they have believed those lies and keep spreading them.

Forgive me for repeating myself, but, Example 1: I recently came across a Facebook reel where a pastor was holding a bible in his outstretched arm towards heaven and shouting at his congregation, “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with the world today! Nobody fears God anymore!” We’re not supposed to fear God, we’re supposed to love Him. We should be in awe of Him, we should be reverent towards Him, but we’re not supposed to be afraid of Him.

Example 2: A 19th Century parson was confront with the truth about hell (that there is no hell). His response? “I know there is no hell, but if I don’t stand at the pulpit and preach hellfire, I can’t fill the pews!” Are we trying to bring people closer to God, or to scare them into going to church?

And I could go on and on about the lies Satan has injected into Christianity, lies made up by man at the temptation of Satan, and lies that keep getting spread today. “The Old Testament is obsolete.” “Forget about what God says, Jesus established a new law.” “The Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday.” “It’s okay to eat unclean meat as long as God blesses it”. “If you don’t repent, you’ll burn in hell for eternity.” “You needn’t worry about sinning because you’re under the Grace of Jesus; He died on the cross for your sins.” All lies! Lies perpetuated by Satan to get you to think it’s okay to sin.

So when I start out reading a chapter of the Bible the immediately starts talking about the wrath of God, I don’t care to read anymore, thank you. Sorry Satan, I’m not going to be brainwashed anymore.

God is love. Nothing but pure, unconditional love. And we can have eternal life with Him if we accept that love and love Him in return. And when I say love Him, obey His laws and commands because we love Him so much, the last thing we want to do is to hurt Him. And I refuse to believe anything to the contrary.
